$300 House Challenge

  • Use local materials and labor to build rammed-earth four-plexes. Construction is efficient because walls are shared between units. Plumbing (for a sink) and power is supplied at the center of each group. A sense of "place" is important, even on a limited budget.
  • Residents start with a one-room unit. As their family grows or their needs change, the building can be reconfigured to include two-, three-, or four-room units. Thermal breaks are inserted in the floor and walls so that the temperature inside the unit is modulated by the thermal mass of the isolated interior walls. The program indicated that toilet and bathing facilities will be housed separately. Click for a construction sequence video.
